Organon Sans: Hidden Gem

Organon Sans is a refreshingly characterful sans serif with sturdy, tapered stems and distinguishable quirks, one half of the Organon set alongside close relative Organon Serif.

A detailed new PDF specimen shows Organon Sans in all its glory and is free to download from the master font page. Alternatively you can flick through the pages online at our issuu repository.

<img title="G-Type Organon Sans font" src="{{media url="/OrgSansspec.png"}}" alt="Organon Sans font specimen" />

Organon Sans is definitely one of the hidden gems in the G-Type library, overshadowed by more high profile text families like Chevin Pro or Houschka Pro. Take a closer look though and you'll appreciate the carefully crafted letterforms & excellent legibility which is enhanced by the typeface's generous spacing.

The family has six weights running from Light to UltraBlack and includes a small caps set, plus multiple figure options and OpenType features such as 3 style sets and case sensitive forms.

Test drive the fonts, download the PDF and fall in love with Organon Sans.

Cystic Fibrosis Custom Font

<img title="Cystic Fibrosis Custom Font" src="{{media url="/cystic_fibrosis_is_what_555Crop.jpg"}}" alt="New Cystic Fibrosis Identity" />

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust have unveiled a vibrant new identity developed by johnson banks which features a bespoke handwriting font produced by G-Type's Nick Cooke.

The friendly and informal handwritten styling lends personality and humanity to the CFT brand and offsets the use of Helvetica in what johnson banks refer to as an "active identity system", eschewing the use of a traditional logo in favour of a "naming device".

<img title="Cystic Fibrosis Bespoke Handwriting Font" src="{{media url="/cs4_0.jpg"}}" alt="Cystic Fibrosis Naming Device" />

Michael Johnson has revealed how the agency had their eureka moment:
"The Trust was grappling with a an outdated and cumbersome house-style. As the research stage progressed, we kept asking, 'but what is Cystic Fibrosis, exactly?’ and received a multitude of different responses. Mid-way through the research stage we had a breakthrough when we noticed the ‘is’ at the end of ‘fibrosis’.

We suggested the charity should activate the ‘is’ in their name with a series of statements, effectively forcing it to always explain what it is, does, and why they are here."

The CFT have fervently embraced the new system. "Rather than a new logo, we have developed a new naming device around the words “cystic fibrosis”, to better explain and communicate the impact that cystic fibrosis has on people’s lives, and what we are doing to fight for a better deal for those with the condition. It is a hugely flexible device that can communicate the different messages we want to convey to different audiences. These vary for supporters, staff, politicians or any other group – and will make our communications more effective going forward."

<img title="Cystic Fibrosis Custom Font by G-Type" src="{{media url="/cs6_0.jpg"}}" alt="Cystic Fibrosis Naming Device" />

<img title="Cystic Fibrosis Bespoke Handwriting Font" src="{{media url="/cystic_fibrosis_brand_life_sentence_revised.jpg"}}" alt="Cystic Fibrosis bespoke font" />

Kath Tudball of johnson banks supplied sheets of handwritten sentences for Nick to transform into an intelligent handwriting font. The resulting OpenType face contains a full Latin 1 character set plus additional ligatures and alternates required to produce an authentic handwritten style, letter combinations programmed to change on the fly as they're typed to avoid duplication. G-Type fonts such as Olicana and Rollerscript employ similar typographic techniques to great effect.

The Cystic Fibrosis custom font will hopefully serve the Trust well in the years ahead, helping to raise awareness about this life-shortening genetic condition that kills thousands worldwide every year.

Accent Graphic brands Ferragamo

<img title="Ferragamo Signorina packaging using Accent Graphic font" src="{{media url="/Ferragamo_Signorina_parfum_700x636.jpg"}}" alt="Accent Graphic font used by Ferragamo Signorina" />

The internationally renowned Italian luxury goods manufacturer Salvatore Ferragamo have launched a new fragrance called Signorina and we're delighted they've opted to use G-Type's Accent Graphic font as the face of the new brand.

Using the Light weight of Accent Graphic conveys just the right note of elegance and style for this new suite of products which includes eau de parfum, soap, body lotion and bath oils. To quote Ferragamo, "Signorina is a fragrance that celebrates every chic young woman with a sophisticated, subtly cheeky and fresh scent signature."

<img title="Ferragamo Signorina packaging using Accent Graphic font" src="{{media url="/Ferragamo_Signorina_parfumx2_700x458.jpg"}}" alt="Accent Graphic font used by Ferragamo Signorina" />

For over 90 years Ferragamo have traded on a reputation for design excellence and hand-crafted quality, starting when the young Salvatore opened a boot shop in Santa Barbara in 1919 and caught the eye of Hollywood's elite. He quickly became known as "shoemaker to the stars" and the Ferragamo brand's association with footwear was established.

Since then the company has evolved into an all-round purveyor of luxury goods including designer bags, timepieces, fragrances, jewellery and assorted leather accessories.

<img title="Ferragamo Signorina packaging using Accent Graphic font" src="{{media url="/Signorina_Soap_700x399.jpg"}}" alt="Accent Graphic font used by Ferragamo Signorina" />

The Accent Graphic typeface was designed by Nick Cooke in 3 weights: Light, Medium & Bold. Flared stems and graceful strokes make for a classically elegant styling which is a perfect fit for Ferragamo.

All three fonts in the family were updated and extended in 2011 to include coverage for Central European & Turkish languages; the fonts are available in OpenType format. Take them for a test drive on the master font page and download the free PDF specimen.

In Development: Precious Sans II

Some keen observers amongst you <img style="float: right; margin: 0px 10px;" title="Precious Sans comparison: New vs Old" src="{{media url="/Compareold_new.png"}}" alt="Precious Sans II font development" width="450" />will have noticed that our Precious Sans & Serif families, originally released in 2002, are not yet available in OpenType.

Why the delay?

Well, we didn't just want to spit out a standard OT conversion of the old PostScript data, mainly because there were improvements to be made to the original letter shapes, and in several cases complete character replacements.

The lower case 'g' is a good example. Many people were put off by the quirkiness of the glyph so we thought a less outlandish letterform would improve text setting and not divert the eyes quite so much. Same goes for the f which now sits on the baseline.

The preview image on the right of this page shows the original design at the bottom and the revised version above it; primary alterations are flagged in red, though nearly every character has been refined to some degree. Certain adjustments, such as extended top curves on the a & s, are very simple but will vastly improve the usability for body copy.

The new fonts, provisionally labelled Precious Sans II, will also have Small Caps, additional figure sets, more extensive language coverage and many other OpenType features.

Stay tuned!

NEW CONTÉ À PARIS LOGOTYPE BY G-TYPE

The internationally renowned Conté à Paris, revered by artists for the craftmanship of its art materials, has launched a range of new products which feature an updated company logo by G-Type's Nick Cooke.

<img title="New Conté à Paris logotype by Nick Cooke" src="{{media url="/GT_Conte_1.png"}}" alt="Conté à Paris logo by G-Type" />

Nick's original letterforms developed for the client (via their agency Turner Duckworth) were considered "too perfect" and it was the later, more characterful, hand-drawn version which won final approval. Each letter flows effortlessly into the next and is a perfect fit for the company which was formed in 1795 by the larger than life Nicolas Jacques Conté.

Born in 1755, Conté claimed the title of painter, chemist, physicist, hot air baloonist and inventor during his fifty years on the planet. In 1794, he developed a modern graphite lead from a mixture of clay and graphite, and a year later opened the pencil factory which was the forerunner of today's organisation; in 2012 it still makes the finest crayons, pencils, charcoals and pastels.

Our Houschka Pro typeface is working really well branding top German communications outfit Metapaper who offer an impressive suite of digital print services, fast turnaround proofing, paper research & stock sourcing. The company operates 2 hubs, one in Stuttgart and the other in Hamburg.

The website went live in 2012 using Houschka Pro throughout and the fonts are also used extensively on Metapaper packaging, signage and corporate stationery.

<img title="Metapaper website using Houschka Pro webfonts" src="{{media url="/Metapaper_home_700.jpg"}}" alt="Metapaper branding in Houschka Pro typeface" />

The organisation built an eye-catching exhibition stand for the mammoth DRUPA 2012 trade show to showcase their services, paper and digital print solutions.

The temptation to use Erik Spiekermann's FF Meta typeface as the corporate font must have been huge but perhaps that was deemed just too obvious; we're not complaining!

Chevin Pro Legibility

Chevin Pro is probably our most versatile typeface design, its open counters and semi condensed width making it a highly functional modern sans serif font which performs brilliantly on everything from magazines to company reports. Royal Mail use it on all their branded literature and every UK Post Office is emblazoned with Chevin on countless items of signage.

Chevin also excels when it comes to informational design and packaging work as the following box layouts for Romania's leading pharmaceutical manufacturer Labormed illustrate.

In this instance the legible letterforms and contemporary nature of Chevin's characters fit perfectly with the colourful abstract shapes on the packaging. Artwork for these products was created by Grapefruit in Romania.

Another important advantage is that Chevin comes with extensive language coverage. The Chevin Std font family includes Western, Central European, Baltic & Turkish glyphs while Chevin Pro also includes Cyrillic (Russian) as well as many more additional OpenType features not present in the Std fonts.

Houschka or Houschka Alt: which one should I buy?

<img style="float: right; margin-left: 20px; margin-right: 20px;" title="Houschka vs Houschka Alt fonts" src="{{media url="/HouschkaProVsAlt_220.png"}}" alt="Houschka vs Houschka Alt fonts" />

With the release this month of Houschka Rounded Alt, bringing the number of separate Houschka font families to 4, we thought it'd be useful to round up what the key differences are between each OpenType set and help you decide which option is best for you.

It really couldn't be simpler.

Think more in terms of 2 Houschka typeface variations with an Alt version of each.

Houschka Pro is a clean and legible modern sans, classically elegant and friendly. Houschka Rounded is the softer, cuter companion with more rounded terminals.

By default each font has the signature arched A & W characters on the default keyboard positions. The straight A & W glyphs are included as alternates which can be selected via the glyph palette or contextual OpenType feature activation.

<img title="Houschka vs Houschka Alt font options" src="{{media url="/Houschka-vs-ALT.png"}}" alt="Houschka vs Houschka Alt font options" />

The Alt versions of each set were produced for those of you who prefer to have the straight, less quirky A & W on the default slots. Perfect if you want a slightly more formal, corporate vibe with a font that reads better in a company report.

And there you have it, those are the only differences between the standard and Alt variants of Houschka Pro & Houschka Rounded. All font families have 6 weights (Thin through to ExtraBold) plus italics, and identical character sets, notwithstanding the reversed glyphs.
